 FINDING AREA 

Area is the amount of space inside a shape, and we measure it using square units, like counting how many little squares can fit inside the shape. Learning about area is important because it helps us know how much space we have for things like putting furniture in a room or planning a garden, so we can use our space better!

Let us take for example the Giant’s kitchen. Looking at the picture, how many square tiles cover the kitchen floor?

To know the number of tiles that cover the kitchen floor, we may count the square tiles that cover the floor.

 1. Count from the first row left to right, then downwards.

2. 12 square tiles can cover the kitchen floor.

3. Therefore, the area of the kitchen is 12 square units. 


Another way of finding the number of tiles that can cover the floor is:

First, count the number of tiles arranged in each row. This stands for the length side.

Then, count the number of tiles in each column. This stands for the width side.

Multiplying the length side with 4 and the width side with 3, gives us 12.

Therefore, we can say that when we multiply the side and the length gives us the same result as when we counted all the tiles that cover the floor.

Multiplying the length and side gives us the area, therefore this lead us to the formula

Area = Length X Width

Using the formula to find the area of a larger space, like a big rectangle or square, is very important because it saves us time and effort compared to counting each unit one by one. Counting can work well for smaller spaces, but as spaces get bigger, the formula helps us find the area quickly and accurately. Learning to use the formula makes it easier for us to measure and understand the size of any space, big or small, in a smart and efficient way.

Let us try to solve word problems, involving area:

Let us assume that the giant’s kitchen was extended for more space that covers another row of square tiles. What is the new area of the kitchen floor? (Originally the dimensions were 4 square units by 3 square units)

We can also solve problems about area by drawing or illustration in graphing paper or by using ruler if there is no graphing paper

 

Looking at the figure formed, the kitchen floor now have the same side length of 4 square units, the shape of the floor now becomes square.

Therefore, we can just multiply the side length by itself to get the area.

We can then use the formula:

Area = side × side or Area = s2

Solution:

Area = side x side

A = s x s

A = 4 units x  4 units

A = 16 square units

 Or we can just count the number of squares covered by the illustration.

When we measure the area of different spaces, we use units like square centimeters and square meters. Smaller spaces, like a book cover or a small garden bed, are often measured in square centimeters, while larger spaces, like walls or playgrounds, are measured in square meters. Let’s look at some examples to see how we can find the area using both of these units!

Example 1 

Emma has a rectangular picture frame that is 5 cm long and 3 cm wide. She wants to find out how much space the frame covers.

What is the area of Emma’s picture frame in square centimeters?

Solution:

To find the area of the rectangular frame, multiply the length by the width.

Area = length × width

Area = 5 cm × 3 cm

Area = 15 square centimeters

So, the area of Emma's picture frame is 15 sq. cm.

Example 2

Liam has a square pool in his backyard. Each side of the pool is 6 meters long. He wants to find out the area of the pool

What is the area of Liam’s pool in square meters?


Solution:

To find the area of a square, multiply the length of one side by itself.

Area = side × side

Area = 6 m × 6 m

Area = 36 square meters

So, the area of Liam's pool is 36 square meters.
